Project: 2024.T4 Interoperability Sandbox

Content

Project Summary

The openIMIS Interoperability Sandbox is a GIZ-led initiative aimed at enhancing the interoperability of the openIMIS platform by creating a secure, scalable testing environment where real-world integration scenarios with digital public goods like openCRVS, DHIS2, and OpenHIE can be demonstrated and validated. This sandbox will support agile development, FHIR-based data exchange, and automated testing to improve alignment with international standards and streamline health financing and social protection workflows. By fostering collaboration across stakeholders and strengthening digital infrastructure, the project will help reduce integration barriers, improve service delivery, and expand equitable access to essential health and social protection services.

Project Description

The openIMIS Sandbox Setup is a strategic initiative designed to strengthen digital health systems through enhanced interoperability and usability of the openIMIS platform, an open-source digital public good that supports health financing and social protection programs. By providing a secure, modular, and scalable testing environment, the sandbox allows developers, implementers, and policymakers to simulate real-world scenarios and evaluate how openIMIS integrates with other digital systems, particularly in the context of health insurance, civil registration, and social protection delivery.

This initiative is led by GIZ in collaboration with stakeholders from the openIMIS community, and aligns with international frameworks such as OpenHIE, GovStack, and the Digital Convergence Initiative (DCI). It provides a space to test FHIR-based interoperability, validate automated data exchange with platforms like openCRVS and DHIS2, and foster better alignment with emerging global health and social protection standards. The project follows a phased implementation approach—beginning with needs analysis and roadmap development, followed by agile component-based implementation, and concluding with long-term maintenance and community support.

Ultimately, the sandbox will reduce integration barriers, strengthen digital infrastructure, and support countries in expanding social protection and health coverage, especially for underserved populations. It will serve as a replicable reference environment for ongoing development, training, and testing, positioning openIMIS as a scalable and sustainable solution for integrated digital health and social protection ecosystems worldwide.
