Summary
Cameroon has adopted openIMIS, as a digital public good, to unify and streamline its health financing schemes into a single, integrated platform, advancing the country’s long-term vision for Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Launched in January 2023, the initiative aims to improve efficiency, transparency, and governance in health service delivery, ensuring free or highly subsidized access for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children under five, and individuals affected by HIV, tuberculosis, and kidney failure. Building on over a decade of technical and financial support from Swiss, French, and German partners, Cameroon initially piloted openIMIS for community health funds and later expanded its use to manage the HIV user fee removal scheme and the maternal and newborn health voucher program (Chèques Santé). The platform now integrates common processes like invoicing, payments, and monitoring across these schemes, enabling data-driven decision-making and robust health sector governance. Through agile development, strong local partnerships, and capacity-building efforts, openIMIS has been deployed in over 500 health facilities with 3.000 users across all 10 regions, with ongoing training for health workers and plans to further scale its use nationwide. By Dec 2025 the openIMIS managed program reached more than 5 million beneficiaries, aspiring coverage of 29 million people at national scale. This initiative not only strengthens Cameroon’s health system but also positions the country as a key contributor to the global openIMIS community, fostering innovation and collaboration in digital health infrastructure.
