This term is a close synonym of insured, however it usually connotes benefits in a particular form of insurance scheme. This word became popular with the HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) movement in the USA and is now used in other countries to represent membership in an integrated health services delivery scheme. An example is when a payer has its own health care delivery system.
