Current Implementations

The Insurance Management Information System (IMIS) was originally designed and implemented since 2012 by Swiss TPH in Tanzania as part of the Health Promotion and System Strengthening Project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Since 2013 the system has been implemented in Cameroon on a project to support the church based schemes of Bamenda Ecclesiastical Provincial Health Assistance (BEPHA), supported by Swiss TPH and funded by MISEREOR. In 2014 Swiss TPH supported the transfer of the system to Nepal to support the national health insurance scheme set up by the government under a GIZ funded Nepal Health Sector Support Programme, which continues to support the implementation of the system. In 2017 under Programme d’Appui au Système de Santé du Sud-Kivu project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Swiss TPH supported a pilot implementation of the system with 8 mutuelles.

Types of insurance schemes

openIMIS is a generalized insurance software designed to support different insurance models and currently supports the following health insurance models in the current implementation countries:

  • Nepal – Centralized (National) government supported (through the Health Insurance Board) social health insurance scheme targeting the informal sector
  • Cameroon, Chad and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – Church supported community based health insurance schemes/mutuelles targeting primarily rural and informal sector population
