Products created by the openIMIS Initiative are published under free and open licenses. These are licenses that follow the principles of the Creative Commons for non-software products such as training materials or graphics and the principles for source software by the open source initiative.

openIMIS Software License

The openIMIS software product is licensed under an open-source software license with a copy-left clause called GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3. The following text is a summary from TLDRlegal for your convenience - read the full openIMIS Software License Agreement here.

You may:

  • Use commercially - Describes the ability to use the software for commercial purposes.

  • Modify - Describes the ability to modify the software and create derivatives.

  • Distribute - Describes the ability to distribute original or modified (derivative) works.

  • Place Warranty - Describes the ability to place warranty on the software licensed.

If you:

  • Include Copyright - Describes whether the original copyright must be retained.

  • Include License - Including the full text of license in modified software.

  • State Changes - Stating significant changes made to software.

  • Disclose Source - You must disclose your source code when you distribute, publish or serve (i.e. through a web portal) modified or derivative software.

  • Include Install Instructions - Describes the necessity to include build & install instructions.

You may not:

  • Sublicense - Describes the ability for you to grant/extend a license to the software.

  • Hold Liable - Describes the warranty and if the software/license owner can be charged for damages.

Third-Party Software Licenses

The openIMIS code base also depends on or includes source code that was developed from third parties. The intellectual property rights belong to those developers and were published under open source licenses that might follow a different licensing model.

This page gives an edited overview of third party packages to our best knowledge for you convenience. Please refer to the respective code repositories for the original conditions.

Please be aware that the legacy parts of the openIMIS package are still based on technologies that belong to the Microsoft Corporation. We are working hard to replace these technologies in our Product Roadmap, but please be aware that there are still dependencies when running or distributing openIMIS.

openIMIS Non-Software License

Non-software products (e.g. texts, graphics, multimedia) of the openIMIS Initiative are licensed with a Creative Commons license, that is in line with the openIMIS Software License.

You may:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format

  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.

If you:

  • Attribute — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

  • ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

  • No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
