Open Source - openIMIS is an open source solution, which is business process and data driven. It is managed and continuously improved by an open source software community. The open source software allows for free download, changes to the code, but also asks the downloading party to feed new developments back to the community.
Supportive - openIMIS is a community of practice for the software development as well as end users and provides capacity development and technical assistance. It strives to engage diverse expertise across disciplines and shares best practices and experiences widely and regularly.
Adaptable - openIMIS is a modular build software, allowing it to be adapted to the needs of a variety of low- and middle-income countries on their path to universal health coverage (UHC).
Interoperable - openIMIS is a software product, which has the potential to work interoperable with other available IT solutions in the health and social protection sector such as Patient Management Systems, Medical Record Systems or Integrated Beneficiary Registries. The interoperability will be reached by using international standards protocols and codes (e.g. Facility Codes, Service Codes, Diagnosis Codes etc.) to submit claims electronically;
Sustainable - openIMIS is designed with the user, for scale and is a corner stone for sustainable growth. It will be continuously improved and reused in new implementations, benefitting from the collaborative nature of the initiative.
Networked - openIMIS is a global community, which is open to all stakeholders interested in exchanging and collaborating in the area of health financing towards Universal Social Protection. openIMIS itself is part of global networks discussing and developing normative standards in digital health and will adhere and promote specific standardized approaches or tools.

The Strategic Principles of the openIMIS Initiative define the nature, the value proposition as well as the Initiative’s vision, mission and expected results. They were agreed upon during the 1st Steering Group meeting in March 2018. As a living document, the Principles are reviewed on a regular basis.
